Local SEO Checklist: Get Your Kerala Business Found on Google Maps

When people search “near me”, Google Maps decides who they call. A practical checklist to help shops, clinics and service businesses in Kerala show up first.

On this page

When someone in Kalpetta, Mananthavady or Sulthan Bathery searches for “tiles shop near me” or “opticals in Wayanad”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those three get most of the calls. Local SEO is the work of earning a place in that list.

The good news: most of it is free, and a small business that does the basics well can beat bigger competitors. Use this checklist to get started.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

  • Claim the profile for free and verify it.
  • Pick the most accurate primary category, then add a few secondary ones.
  • Use your real business name. Do not stuff keywords into it.
  • Add opening hours, holiday hours, phone, WhatsApp and website.
  • Write a clear description of what you sell and which areas you serve.

2. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere

Google trusts a business more when its details match across the web. Check your website, Facebook, Instagram, Justdial and any directory listings. The address and phone number should be written the same way on all of them.

3. Ask every happy customer for a review

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they convince the people reading them. Make it easy to leave one:

  • Share your review link on WhatsApp after a sale or service.
  • Print a QR code for the counter or the bill.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly.
  • Never buy reviews or offer gifts for them. Google removes them and can penalise the profile.

4. Post photos and updates every week

Profiles with fresh photos get more clicks. Add pictures of your shop front, team, products and recent work. Use posts to share offers, new stock and festival timings. Short videos and reels you already make for Instagram work well here too.

5. Make your website work for local searches

  • Mention your town and the areas you serve in page titles and headings.
  • Add a page for each main service instead of one long list.
  • Embed a Google map and show your address on the contact page.
  • Make sure the site loads fast on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile.

6. Track the results

Your Google Business Profile shows how many people called, asked for directions or visited your website from Google. Check it every month. If calls go up, keep going. If not, look again at your categories, photos and reviews.
